SPIRAL

Spiral 1 (5″ x 5″)

Gouache on Paper

Spinning at a high frequency, or spinning out of control? Two totally different things but they look the same on paper. Or maybe this is a rabbit hole and it goes someplace really cool. I’m going to go with high frequency because that’s the zone I want to be in. (Although frustration inspired this painting.) And by high frequency I mean to be in a good flow. If you want to read a killer book about being “in the flow” I recommend “FLOW” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It’s a great read.

I just can’t stop painting. Sorry ferrous metals. I promise I will be back.

WAG

Pink Tail (10.75″ x 7.75″)

Gouache on Paper

I wonder where this guy is going? His tail looks neutral so he is probably just heading to the nearest dog bed — no rush — as nothing exciting is going on. The reasons for this painting are two. One, I love dog butts and tails, and two, I don’t like tail docking. If a dog’s tail is docked that is fine but, most people don’t know that research is showing that it is detrimental to the dog. It can hinder communication with other dogs and humans, cause balance issues, and the tail acts as a sort of rudder when swimming and without the whole tail it’s probably not as effective. Most people also don’t know that tail and ear docking is illegal in most European countries and you can’t show dogs in the UK if the tail was docked after April 2007. You can read more about tail docking and the legal status of dog tail docking and ear cropping by country here. I’m surprised that we don’t hear more about docking in the United States. My vote would be to outlaw all animal docking in the US. And while I am on the subject, I think we should legalize marijuana, and of course, gay marriage, which in my opinion is an utter embarrassment to society that it’s even an issue. It’s 2012 people!

CHEMISTRY

Dog Park (12″ x 8″)

Gouache on Paper

I wonder if these two have chemistry? Tails are up which is a good sign. What makes some have chemistry and others not? Is it pheromones? How one looks? Acts? Talks? Walks? Their energy level? It’s a pretty cool phenomenon. I know that sometimes I will meet someone and go, “nope.” Or if someone rubs you the wrong way or makes your hair stand on end why is that? Or if you meet someone and are intensely attracted to them. It’s a feeling or gut instinct. I have to remember though not to always judge a book by its cover because you never know what’s inside and it may be really good. I have met people that I wasn’t so sure about and then ended up really liking them, and vice versa.

This is the fourth in the “dog” series. I am going to do one more and I already have a good idea of what I am going to do. I think there will be pink involved. Will post when it’s done.
